Thinking of signing up for a free BearWalden Bootcamp trial this January?
One member shares her experiences and explains how it got her hooked on getting fitter…
OK, I’ll admit it. I had arm envy when I walked into BearWalden CrossFit gym for the first time. Some of these girls have guns to die for. The guys have too, but I’m not looking for big and bulky. I’m after those ultra toned, sleek muscles – and if that’s the kind of results you get here, I want some of that. It’s the perfect inspiration to motivate me through my free Bootcamp trial.
The class starts with Sam, owner and founder of BearWalden, going through the moves we’ll be doing over the next hour. He explains all exercises are scalable and there are regressions for every fitness level. The main thing is to push yourself to the max of your ability so you get fitter, faster. I run quite a bit but feel like I’ve plateaued. Anything that takes me to the next level sounds good to me.
The session is a mix of cardio, weights, and rope climbs. Sam informs us the latter are usually CrossFit moves, but today the Bootcampers will be doing them too. Inside I’m happy dancing because I love a rope climb.
It’s a partner workout so after a thorough warm up and demonstration, we pair up and get moving. Having a partner is great as we spend the hour spurring each other on. It adds to the sense of camaraderie you get at BearWalden. There’s a poster on the wall that states ‘leave your ego at the door’, and refreshingly everyone did. There was no one-upmanship, just a group of genuinely nice people supporting each other through the tough bits.
There’s no denying it, the workout is hard – wall balls, lunges, weighted squats, box jumps, ab work, stints on the assault bike (an exercise bike on steroids that kills calories and pummels thigh muscles into submission) and, of course, the climbing. But it was great fun. I finished the hour sweating like a pig, with a big grin on my face and a craving for more.
Fast forward six months and I’m a fully-fledged CrossFit and Bootcamp addict. To me, it’s an adult’s playground of things you can climb, push, pull, lift, and throw – and every class is different so you never get bored. Crucially, the results are amazing and miles better than I’ve got from any other gym.
I’ve smashed my race times, toned up from top-to-toe (though still working on those ultra arms), and developed muscles where I didn’t know I had them. I’ve even increased my mobility, which is pretty impressive for someone with the flexibility of an ironing board. I blame the running.
But what I love most about BearWalden CrossFit is the people. The coaches and members are awesome and so inclusive. Whether it’s your first foray into fitness or you can bench press 200kg using just your little finger, it’s open and welcoming to all.
Crossfit? I’d say it was more like Happyfit.
